Putting missing kids on your 404 page

Every now and then, you stumble upon a great idea. This post on "the other side of the moon" did that for me - why didn't I think of this! Simply put, the author suggests leveraging your 404 pages to find back missing kids. While the code presented works in the US and Canada and is geared towards Apache, it should not be too hard to make it work anywhere in the world for all kinds of web platforms...
